From Script to Character: The Art of Animation & Video Game Voice Acting

  • Sunday June 28th 11am-2pm Pacific, 2-5pm Eastern with Bryn and Marilyn McAuley 

Strong voice acting starts with strong acting. In this performance-driven animation voice over workshop, actors will learn how to approach self-tapes , make compelling character choices,  break down scenes and deliver performances that feel authentic, dynamic, and playful.

Actors will work closely with Bryn McAuley, who brings the performer’s perspective to breaking down self-tape instructions and transforming character descriptions into playable, specific choices. With over 30 years of experience as an animation producer, casting director, and voice director, Marilyn McAuleyoffers invaluable insight into the casting and producer perspective.

Participants will receive coaching from Bryn and have the opportunity to mock audition for Marilyn in a supportive, professional environment designed to strengthen both performance and audition technique.

Shelby Young will coach participants on both animation and video game technique, as well as providing Q&A time to learn about the industry and her approach to her successful career.

This 3-day workshop will cover:

  • Ensemble recording over Zoom. How to perform with another actor in a Zoom chemistry read or ensemble animation recording session!

  • The one-off or one-line character- how to stay flexible in the booth and make fun offers for one-line characters.

  • Improvising in VO

  • How to break down a script and character description for self tapes

Cost: $300 USD per participant. Maximum 10 participants. 

Audit: $50 USD

  • Together we will develop the character, find a voice that fits the casting breakdown, and interpret the script. I will give you direction and help you select takes. My goal is to keep the work playful and I use your impulses to guide my direction.

    Zoom or in-person: $85

    In-person with editing: $110

  • Ongoing Animation coaching is a great option if you:

    • work in theatre or film/tv and want to learn how to translate your acting skills to animation voice over.

    • want to develop or expand your range of characters.

    • are a beginner who has always wanted to explore animation voice over work.

  • Put your ear and vocal range to the test by practicing impressions of celebrities or existing cartoon characters. I will support you in analyzing, breaking down and imitating the voice.

    I also offer commercial voice over coaching for children. Adults seeking commercial VO coaching can contact me for a referral.

    Impressions 60 minutes: $100

    Commercial 30 minutes: $55 or $80 with editing

    Commercial 60 minutes: $85 or $110 with editing
